About Us

Kaylir Canteen

The mural-covered facade of Kaylir Canteen

Tucked into the quiet of CIT Colony in Alwarpet, Kaylir is a self-service canteen built on a simple belief — that good, home-cooked food should bring people together. Founders Bhargav and Dhanya deliberately steered clear of the polished café template, choosing instead the warmth of a village gathering place.

Our story

Bamboo ceilings, rustic wooden seating styled after the old thinnai verandas, and walls alive with the work of local artists — every corner of Kaylir is unpretentious and handmade. The name comes from the Sangam-era Tamil line “Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir”: to us, all towns are one, and all people are our kin.

Our food is cooked by passionate home chefs — idli, vadai and crisp dosai through the morning, a generous midday saappadu, hot bajji and bonda in the evening, and degree filter coffee all day. Everything is pure vegetarian, with vegan and gluten-free options — and yes, your dog is welcome too.

Here you order at the counter, collect your plate at the window, and clear it yourself when you're done. It's slow, it's communal, and it feels like home.

"Vegan and gluten-free options that are actually thought through, not an afterthought. The podi idli and nannari sarbath are my regulars now."

"The thinnai seating and bamboo ceiling take you back. Come for breakfast, stay for the coffee, and clear your own plate — it's part of the charm."
